About AAASCEC

In addition to its academic program, The Ohio State University Department of African American and African Studies (AAAS) sponsors the Community Extension Center. The Community Extension Center conducts research projects, hosts symposia and national conferences on a variety of humanities topics in addition to offering credit and non credit courses to students from The Ohio State University campus and the surrounding community.

Located three minutes from downtown and in the heart of a predominantly African American area of the city, The Community Extension Center has been a focal point where major issues of local and national concern are addressed. Since its opening in 1985, many scholars, activists, private, religious and governmental agencies have either utilized the services of the Community Extension Center or participated in its programs. These programs are offered at either no cost and/or a nominal cost to the public.

The Community Extension Center has been recognized by many residents of the community, the University, and governmental officials for its service to the African American and African community in Ohio and the United States

Our Mission Statement

As a public land grant institution, The Ohio State University recognizes its legal and moral obligations to educate and enhance the quality of life for Ohioans and to address the most pressing issues confronting the citizens of Ohio in its curricula and research endeavors.

With this purpose in mind, the primary mission of the African American and African Studies Community Extension Center is to enhance community access to the University where access has been limited in the past, and thereby improve the relationship between the University and Columbus’s African American and African community.

The College of Humanities claims the distinction of being, "the core of the university and bears of liberal learning." As part of the College, the African American and African Studies Community Extension Center will integrate academic research and extension work, particularly the kind of research that affects the African American and African community.
